Hey folks: if you're here it means you're interested in taking the joint University of California - Hanoi University class (UCHANU, get it?) about contemporary Vietnamese society in the fall semester of 2010. Either that or you can recognize a fine bowl of phở bò tái when you see it. Either way, you're in a good place, because this is a very good class (and that is a very good bowl of phở bò tái).
Essentially, what we're trying to do is explore the human side of this process we call "Development." We're going to get beyond issues of GDP, ODA, FDI, and all those other acronyms, and look at the experience of ordinary people as they live through a period of extraordinarily rapid economic, social, and cultural change. As a result, the classroom mainly exists as a space for us to prepare to get out into the real world, and then to come talk about what we learned while we were out there.
The main focus of the class is a group project involving 3-4 folks each that will take up the entire semester: basically, you're going to pick a problem, research it, and then DO something about it. Yup, you're pretty much going to start your own NGO. If you want to see some of the cool stuff students from 2009 did, search for "Motopool" or "StudentACT" on Facebook (and the UCHANU 2010 Facebook page we'll have up, too). If this interests you, keep reading: below you'll find instructions on how to apply, along with a copy of our syllabus from 2009. And if it doesn't, thanks for reading this far, and have a nice day!
